Orleans MA Nauset-Beach Orleans is the commercial center of lower Cape Cod. It abounds with shops and businesses, recreational opportunities, panoramic ocean views and a peaceful ambiance that draws tourists and new residents to the area year-round.

Settled in 1693 as a section of Eastham (then Nauset), the town was incorporated in 1797 taking the name of the Duke of Orleans, who later became King Phillipe of France. Consequently, Orleans is the only Cape Cod town to have a French name; all others have English or Native American origins.

Early industries in Orleans revolved around the sea. In the eighteenth century, the whaling business boomed in the area and the nation’s first salt works was built in the town in 1775. The sea was bountiful for the residents of Orleans but its dangerous shoreline claimed many shipwrecks until the construction of the Cape Cod Canal. Today, Rock Harbor, the center of nautical commerce and history for Orleans, maintains a large charter boat sports fishing fleet.

Bordered by the spectacular Nauset Beach on the Atlantic Ocean and Cape Cod Bay, Orlean’s natural beauty is plentiful. It has a quaint town center housing numerous small shops, gift stores, art galleries and restaurants. The historic district is home to a number of museums, landmarks and the Academy Playhouse, a live summer theater venue. Fishing, swimming, boating and biking are popular activities for residents and tourists and the town hosts an annual “Pops in the Park” featuring the Cape Cod Symphony Orchestra. Proceeds from the event go toward a scholarship for a graduating Nauset Regional High School senior.
