Can a Retired Person Qualify for a Home Mortgage?

Financing mortgage after retirement.The short answer to the question is “Yes.” Lenders are not allowed to discriminate or be biased by a borrower’s age.  Each loan is considered on the basis of the borrower’s credit history, capacity to carry the mortgage plus any additional installment/revolving debt and the value of the collateral – the property being purchased or refinanced.

Acceptable sources of income for the retiree include, but are not limited to:  Social Security; Social Security Disability Income; Military Retirement Benefits; Pension Income and Dividend or Interest Income.  Most often the borrower will be asked to document this income with an Award or Benefit letter, tax returns and bank statements.  The lender will expect the borrower to continue to receive the income/benefit for at least the next three years.

As always, the best way to determine if you qualify for a mortgage is to speak with a licensed mortgage professional.  The investment of time is a small price to pay for the peace of mind of knowing exactly how much you can afford and how to plan your home search.

Easton, a History Buff’s Dream Home

First settled in 1694 and incorporated in 1722, Easton, Massachusetts is home to quite a lot of history.
