The USS Salem - American history in Quincy, MA.

Looking for a little nautical adventure this weekend without the Dramamine? Consider taking a tour of the USS Salem and Shipbuilding Museum, docked in its birthplace at the former Fore River Shipyard in Quincy.

You’ll get a taste of life on board the world’s only preserved U.S. Naval heavy cruiser, a vessel that once belonged to the most powerful class of WWII era warships. Commissioned in 1949 a few years after the war ended, the USS Salem never saw battle, but she is the only surviving US Navy “all-big-gun” cruiser of her time.

A trip to the museum takes you through a number of on-board exhibits including one established in 2002 as a tribute to the Navy SEALs, the elite fighting unit featured in the recent blockbuster movie, “Act of Valor.” Climb up to the 3rd deck of the warship and tour the U.S. Navy Cruiser Sailors Memorial Room, the USS Salem Memorial Room, USS Newport News Memorial Room, and a Model Exhibit Display Room.

The museum also offers an “Overnight Adventure” allowing guests to participate in simulated combat duties, such as radar tracking, firefighting, and damage control. You and your kids can take part in scavenger hunts, sleep in the sailor’s bunks and enjoy meals in the crews’ mess deck during the overnight stay.

The USS Salem Museum hours are Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m.-4:00 p.m. If you have a group of 10 or more or want to hold a birthday party or special event on board, you can make a reservation for another day of the week.

Admission is $8 for adults, and $6 for seniors and children aged 4-12. Call 617-479-7900 for more information.

While driving around the community of Southfield you’ll notice something that may seem a bit out of the ordinary for most towns –a large plane on display next door to the town’s Welcome Center. Over the past 50 years the area now known as Southfield has been home to over 80 different types of aircraft. Until 1997, this area was the South Weymouth Naval Air Station.

Southfield MAHistoric Airbase

The 6 million dollar project to create a Naval Air Base was originally started in 1940. Over 1,000 acres of land within the towns of South Weymouth, Rockland and Abington were acquired by the U.S. Navy to build an airbase for dirigibles (blimps) used to patrol the North Atlantic Ocean during World War II. Although the last operating blimp squadron of the U.S. Navy was disestablished in 1961, the South Weymouth Naval Air Station continued to operate as an important base for New England.

Today, at Shea Field Memorial Grove, located across the street from Southfield’s Welcome Center, features a retired A-4 Skyhawk Navy jet fighter. The plane was dedicated in 2004 to commemorate the Base’s 55+ years of service to the Navy and New England.

Weymouth – The street lights are on, the sidewalks are paved and the first neighborhood is under construction at SouthField, the giant master-planned community to be built on the 1,400-acre former South Weymouth Naval Air Base. Sixty Realtors from nine Jack Conway sales offices attended a recent presentation at the SouthField Visitors Center hosted by the Interactive Building Group (IBG), the Hingham real estate-based builder that is constructing “The Meadows,” a development of 34 townhomes priced from $389,000 to the mid-$400,000s. The units range in size from 1,850 sq. ft. to 2,100 sq. ft with 2-3 bedrooms, 2.5 baths, and rear-entry 2-car garages.

The SouthField community will ultimately include nearly 3,000 homes, consisting of apartments, single family houses, townhomes and condominiums. Located adjacent to the MBTA’s commuter rail station, it will also house 2 million square feet of stores and offices, a movie theater, a sports complex, a town common, soccer fields, and an 18-hole golf course.

“We were happy to invite the Jack Conway brokers to our presentation,” said IBG Principal Paul Abelite. “We never expected such a big turnout of agents, and everyone had a question and showed enthusiasm for our project. We welcome buyers from Conway Country sales offices to come and talk with us at any time. We can show them the plans for the various townhomes right now, and our model unit will be open by June.”

From left, Conway-Weymouth manager Tom Melanson, Conway VP Dick Cahill, IBG’s Jane Sheehy, IBG’s Gene Raymond, Conway CEO Carol Bulman and IBG’s Paul Abelite talk about the SouthField plans.

“The demonstration by IBG was very exciting,” said Conway-Weymouth Manager Tom Melanson, who accompanied his sales team to the event. “It was a great chance for our agents to talk directly with the builder, see the site firsthand and get a feel for the entire project. I’m sure the spring season will see a lot of interest in The Meadows.”

Conway CEO Carol Bulman described the meeting as “an incredible opportunity” for her firm to get a close-up look at SouthField. “I’m happy that Paul Abelite and his group invited us to meet with them  about the Meadows,” said Bulman. “Our agents are very excited about the project, and I’m hoping we will play a big role in helping IBG to sell out its new neighborhood.”

Jane Sheehy, the sales and marketing director for IBG, welcomed the Conway agents to her company’s presentation.  “We want to let South Shore Realtors know that this community is happening, homes are being sold, and more are under construction,” said Sheehy. “We need to spread the word that SouthField is real – it’s here and it’s a great place to live.”

Owning a Home Today May Cost LESS than Renting an Apartment

That’s the message Jack Conway, Realtor is sending out to renters in the cities and towns it serves.

Owning a Home Cheaper than Renting

Owning a Home Cheaper than Renting?

All Conway sales centers are launching a direct mail campaign that will include customized charts comparing renters’ actual monthly payments to monthly mortgage costs for sample houses and condominiums in their area.

Renters are also invited to attend free Home Ownership Consultations in your local Conway office with Realtors and mortgage specialists on designated evenings during the week.

“According to statistics reported by the National Multi-Housing Council, at least one third of renters are planning to move in the spring and another third in the fall,” said Conway Regional VP Dick Cahill, who launched the new initiative. “That’s why we are reaching out to these potential buyers now while they are considering other housing options and before they decide to renew their leases.”

Conway CEO Carol Bulman believes the time is right to target the rental population since housing prices have stabilized and mortgage interest rates remain near record lows:

These factors along with the advantages of home ownership; building equity, tax deductible mortgage interest, and stable monthly payments, make this the right time to spread the word that renters may actually be able to finance a home for less than what they’re paying their landlord.

Most people understand that buying a house makes sense, but they don’t think they can afford it.  We’re asking them to read our mailings, come to one of our free consultations and explore their options. The dream of homeownership could become a reality far sooner than they think.
