Bridgewater is a hometown that truly feels like home to the more than 26,000 residents who live there. Located almost 30 miles south of Boston, the community has a newly remodeled town hall, a lush green common, a well-respected school system, and a full slate of sports and activities for children and adults.
The town is probably best known as the home of the 270-acre Bridgewater State University, the largest of the Commonwealth’s nine state universities outside of the UMass system. Originally known as Bridgewater Teacher’s College, the institution was established in 1840 in the basement of the town hall by Massachusetts Education Reformer Horace Mann. Led today by President Dana Mohler-Faria, the school offers a wide range of undergraduate and master’s degrees and serves nearly 10,000 full and part-time students.
Bridgewater’s meticulously maintained town common is the site of many seasonal events and community gatherings, including an Autumn Fest where local merchants and artisans showcase their wares, and a Christmas Visit from Santa Claus with a train ride for children and their families.
The nation’s birthday also gets a big nod every year as the Bridgewater 4th of July Committee coordinates a town-wide parade and fireworks display at Veteran’s Field.
Commuters to Boston, Cape Cod or Providence benefit from easy access to Rtes. 24 and 495, and the Middleboro-Lakeville line of the MBTA commuter rail passes directly through the town.
