The surf is much calmer than nearby Horseneck Beach and because it’s not deep, the water stays relatively warm most of the summer. During low tide, you can walk out to the sandbars and investigate colonies of small crabs, periwinkles and mussels and let the kids explore sea life “up close and personal.”

The park has on-site restrooms and shower facilities, and offers daily sightings of hawks, ospreys, terns and other less common sea birds. You can canoe, kayak, swim and fish, or hike along the walking trails in the scenic forest area.

Demarest Lloyd State Park, located on Barney’s Joy Road in South Dartmouth, is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on weekdays and 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on weekends and holidays from Memorial Day through Labor Day.

The event was hosted by Luxury Portfolio International, the high-end marketing division of the Leading Real Estate Companies of the World (Leading RE), a global relocation network with nearly 550 member companies producing $225 billion in annual home sales.

The summit featured a 3-day action-packed program where top Realtors and marketers came together to share tips on selling their high-end listings to a global audience. Participants learned from industry leaders how to advance and foster business for their properties at the local and international level.

“It was a phenomenal opportunity to meet and learn from the top agents in the U.S. from LA to New York, and Dallas to Seattle,” said Cauchon. “I also met agents who sell prestigious homes in Paris, Spain, Switzerland, St. Barts and Costa Rica. It really opened our eyes to how far we can reach with Luxury Portfolio and the Leading RE network.”

The USS Salem - American history in Quincy, MA.

Looking for a little nautical adventure this weekend without the Dramamine? Consider taking a tour of the USS Salem and Shipbuilding Museum, docked in its birthplace at the former Fore River Shipyard in Quincy.

You’ll get a taste of life on board the world’s only preserved U.S. Naval heavy cruiser, a vessel that once belonged to the most powerful class of WWII era warships. Commissioned in 1949 a few years after the war ended, the USS Salem never saw battle, but she is the only surviving US Navy “all-big-gun” cruiser of her time.

A trip to the museum takes you through a number of on-board exhibits including one established in 2002 as a tribute to the Navy SEALs, the elite fighting unit featured in the recent blockbuster movie, “Act of Valor.” Climb up to the 3rd deck of the warship and tour the U.S. Navy Cruiser Sailors Memorial Room, the USS Salem Memorial Room, USS Newport News Memorial Room, and a Model Exhibit Display Room.

The museum also offers an “Overnight Adventure” allowing guests to participate in simulated combat duties, such as radar tracking, firefighting, and damage control. You and your kids can take part in scavenger hunts, sleep in the sailor’s bunks and enjoy meals in the crews’ mess deck during the overnight stay.

The USS Salem Museum hours are Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m.-4:00 p.m. If you have a group of 10 or more or want to hold a birthday party or special event on board, you can make a reservation for another day of the week.

Some South Shore communities offer easier access to major highways and public transportation than others. Check out the commuter options in the community you’re interested in. Does it have an MBTA rail stop? Is bus or ferry service to Boston available? Do you prefer living in an area that is accessible only by secondary roads or do you want to be able to jump on and off the highway in your own town?

2)    How much home can you afford?

It’s a good idea to get pre-qualified or pre-approved for a mortgage before you start shopping for South Shore Real Estate. You may love the houses in Hingham, Duxbury or Cohasset, but they may be out of your financial reach. If money is an issue, try searching for homes in towns where you will be able to buy more house for less money.

3)    Do you want to live in a town that has major shopping areas, fast food restaurants and cineplexes?

If so, Braintree, Hanover or Kingston may be a better bet for you than smaller South Shore communities.

4)    How important is it to you to live by the sea?

If living on or near the ocean is a priority for you, you have a lot of choices on the South Shore of Massachusetts. Beautiful water views are available from front porches and bay windows throughout the area.  If money is no object, check out properties for sale along majestic Jerusalem Road in Cohasset, on Scituate’s First Cliff, at World’s End in Hingham, or in the Powder Point neighborhood of Duxbury. On a tighter budget, you can purchase views of the same Atlantic Ocean for less money in communities like Weymouth, Quincy, Marshfield, Hull, or Plymouth.

5)    Do you know what the neighborhood is really like?

No matter what South Shore town you decide to settle in, do your homework before you buy. Visit the neighborhood during rush hour, at night and on weekends. What may seem like a quiet side street when you visit an open house on a Sunday morning may be a cut-through road for commuters during the week or a nightly hangout for local teenagers.

6)    Have you done your homework?

Before you consider buying a home in a particular community, “Google” the town and see what’s been written in newspapers or on-line about the area. If its schools are troubled or if it’s just been honored with a national award, you will want to know that. Do some research, talk to residents, and “feel out” the flavor of your South Shore community before you call it home.

Experts including Warren Buffett are calling single-family homes a very attractive investment right now. Speaking on CNBC’s “Squawk Box”, Buffett said he’d buy up “a couple hundred thousand” single family homes if it were practical to do so.

With interest rates below 4 percent, and prices even lower than a year ago, buying power is at an all-time high. Consider this from Barron’s:  “The National Association of Realtors Housing Affordability Index measures how much purchasing power a median-income family needs in order to buy a median-priced home, using conventional mortgage financing. This measure stood at 206 in January, which meant that the typical family has more than double the income needed to purchase an average home. That reading is more than twice the 102.7 at the peak of the bubble in July 2006.”

The town is probably best known as the home of the 270-acre Bridgewater State University, the largest of the Commonwealth’s nine state universities outside of the UMass system. A group of Jack Conway Realtors recently enjoyed lunch and a tour of the newly expanded Friendship Home in Norwell. The meal was prepared and served by clients at the facility, which provides education, recreation and short-term respite care to people with developmental disabilities.

“We were invited to the luncheon by Linda Malone, the director of fundraising and public relations for the Friendship Home,” said Conway agent Kristen Morse. “Linda asked us to come in and tour their new upstairs respite unit, which includes five bedrooms, a great room, a computer area and a fully equipped kitchen. Clients will now be able to stay overnight for up to two weeks while their family members or caregivers are away.  This is a wonderful service for everyone involved.”

Friendship Home Program Director Laurel Hickey was happy that the Conway group had a chance to visit her building .“We invite the public and community partners to dine at our ‘Friends-4-Ever’ Café, which is entirely run by our clients,” said Hickey. “These guys shop for, cook and serve the meals and handle all the planning from soup to nuts. They do a fabulous job.”

Conway CEO Carol Bulman attended the luncheon along with eight of her colleagues: Elaine Bongarzone, Susan Conway, Liz Charlton, Paul Durgin, Helen Jablonski, Bryan Keaney, Brian McCormick, Kristen Morse, and Dick Stevens. “The Friendship Home is an amazing place,” said Bulman. “Every time I’ve had the opportunity to visit there, the members have filled my heart. They are so kind, open and welcoming. I feel privileged to be in the company of these good people.”

Friendship Home co-founders Wilma Goodhue and Joan Mullare, both parents of adult children with developmental disabilities, have served as advocates for the disabled since 1999. Their dream was to establish a facility where clients could socialize, learn life and work skills, and obtain jobs through a network of community partners. After 10 years of fundraising and hard work, the women saw their dream become a reality when Friendship Home opened in 2010 on one acre of land leased to them for 100 years by the United Church of Christ in Norwell. More than 840 guests recently attended the group’s annual fundraising gala, held at Lombardos in Randolph.
