Participants in the 28th annual Conway Country Charity Golf for the Homeless event at the Easton Country Club helped raise more than $15,000.

The event, run by Jack Conway & Co., benefits homeless causes throughout Southeastern Massachusetts. A damp start didn’t cloud the excitement of the full field of 144 golfers who helped celebrate the event’s 28th year. By the time golfers were on their third hole, the sun was out and course was in superb condition.

“This tournament is so special because we have some people who have been here every year we’ve run it,” said Conway Regional VP Denis Lilla as he welcomed the golfers. “And once again this year we’ve surpassed our fundraising goals and had a lot of fun doing it.

For almost three decades, Conway Country golfers have helped raise over $500,000 since the tournament’s inception in 1984, which went directly to shelters like MainSpring House in Brockton, Conway House in Middleboro and Evelyn House in Stoughton.

The winning team for this year’s tourney was Bill Bridge, Matt Vaughn Brian Reid and Adam Rubin, and they shot a 10-under, 61 in the scramble format. Rubin also won the closest to the pin contest. Tony Lilla won long drive contest for the men, with Tara O’Donnell winning the long drive prize on the ladies side.

A banquet hall filled with orange and gold balloons, cornucopias, fall flowers and stacks of food for the hungry was the setting for Jack Conway, Realtor’s annual Thanksgiving Award Breakfasts held at the Plymouth Radisson Hotel. More than 400 Conway sales associates from Boston to Cape Cod, the South Coast and the North Shore attended the event at which  agents were honored for “team spirit and congeniality.” The winners received gift checks to purchase a Thanksgiving turkey, and all attendees brought non-perishable food items to contribute to the Charity Guild of Brockton.

“We have a lot of functions in our company that recognize agents for top production,” said Conway CEO Carol Bulman. “But this ceremony honors our associates for the intangible qualities of kindness, good humor and camaraderie. These individuals are true winners because they help and support their colleagues and their communities all year long.”

The local recipient of the Conway Thanksgiving Award from the Dorchester office was Anne O’Brien, who was recognized for her volunteer work on behalf of the Franklin Park Zoo and for being a “consistently positive influence in her office.” Also honored at the breakfast was Conway-Dorchester Manager Julie Simmons who received a special Conway Country Community Service Award for her contributions and support of her Dorchester community during the past year. Simmons serves as chairman of the Board of Trustees for the First Parish Church in Dorchester, one of the oldest churches in the city of Boston, and has been actively involved in raising funds for a massive renovation of the Circa 1631 building.

The Annual Thanksgiving breakfasts have been a tradition in Conway Country for more than 30 years, and with all of the great homes for sale in Plymouth MA that Jack Conway represents, the location is a natural choice. “We gather here in America’s hometown every November for our celebration,” said Chairman Jack Conway, who delivered the opening greeting to the group. “It’s where our country’s first Thanksgiving took place, and it reminds us to thank God for the many wonderful things we have in our lives.”

The good works of Conway House, a Middleboro homeless shelter, will get a boost from an upcoming Conway Country Road Race in October. Members of Jack Conway Realtor’s Lakeville office are organizing a 5-mile run next month with all proceeds going to the local shelter for homeless women and children.Conway Country Road Race Logo

The event will take place on Saturday, Oct. 1 from 10 a.m. to noon starting and ending at the Jack Conway Lakeville Office at 10 Main Street (Rte. 105). Runners will travel the scenic country roads of Middleboro and Lakeville before arriving back at the Conway Country finish line. Prizes will be awarded to the first place male and female overall winners as well as winners in specific age groups.

“We’re hoping to have more than 400 runners and a large group of local sponsors involved in the race,” said Denis Lilla, Conway Regional VP and manager of the Lakeville office. “Our Chairman Jack Conway has always been a strong advocate for the homeless and we wanted our race to benefit that cause.”

Conway House was established in 1996 and named in honor of Jack Conway and his wife Patricia in recognition of their lifetime of charitable works. It is operated today by Father Bill’s & MainSpring and provides food, clothing, and counseling to 12 homeless families.

Conway-Lakeville Realtor Bob Joyal is chairman of the Conway Country Road Race Committee, which includes fellow agents Jack Walters, Hugh Harp, Lilla, and Phil Scorgie. “We are asking local businesses to help support our event and add to the funds we can raise for Conway House,” said Joyal. “Sponsorships are available in amounts of $50 to $1,000, each offering marketing opportunities for the sponsor. The registration fee for runners is $20 before Sept. 29, $25 after that date. We’re hoping to make this a community-wide event. Rain or shine, it’s going to be a great day.”

Jack Conway’s new book, Sales Sense, is not only helping his Realtors, it’s helping the homeless as well. Christopher Haraden, Conway’s director of agent services, recently presented the first $1,000 in proceeds from sales of the book to Father Bill’s & MainSpring, a non-profit organization serving the homeless in Southeastern Massachusetts.

“Jack decided to ask for a $10 donation for each autographed copy of Sales Sense in order to benefit one of his favorite charities,” said Haraden. “He wanted his agents to learn from the book and at the same time help out a great cause.”

Chairman Jack Conway, CEO Carol Bulman and Haraden presented the accumulated donations to Tom Washington, director of community relations for Father Bill’s & MainSpring at a recent meeting held at Conway headquarters in Presentation of Sales Sense CheckNorwell.

“We were thrilled to donate these and future proceeds from the sale of my father’s book to such a worthy organization,” said Bulman. “My parents were among the founders of MainSpring House in Brockton back in 1982 and our company has been raising funds for the homeless through golf tournaments and other events for nearly 30 years. We are proud to be allies in the fight to end homelessness in our region.”

Sales Sense is a compilation of 77 “how to” lessons for Realtors written by the “master salesman,” Jack Conway, chairman and founder of one of the largest privately-owned real estate firms in New England. A training course based on the book’s curriculum has been added to the year-round roster of educational classes offered to Conway Country agents.

Portions of new Book, 'Sales Sense' by Jack Conway will go to benefit the homeless

Jack Conway presenting 'Sales Sense'

Sales Sense is the accumulated result of managing while driving around,” said Conway, who turned 87 in December and continues to serve as his company’s chairman of the board. “I travel by day listening to sales agents, and in the evening and early morning hours, I do lots of reading. Trade journals, business magazines and the daily newspapers always have something that lights a fire in my brain and gives me an idea.”

Conway’s book is a compilation of 77 “how-to” lessons for succeeding in a real estate career. It covers such topics as “Total Involvement – One Handshake at a Time,” “Price it Right and It Will Sell,” “It’s All About Attitude,” and “Open Houses to the Rescue.” Conway shares tips from his 56 years as a Realtor and manager with his sales associates in a folksy style that flows from every page.

Sales Sense is a blueprint for success based on my father’s own wisdom and experience,” said Conway CEO Carol Bulman. “It’s a great read from a wonderful teacher and a remarkable man.”

Autographed copies of Conway’s new book are available to his agents for a small donation to Father Bills & MainSpring, a non-profit organization serving the homeless.  Sales Sense will also be used by Conway Education and Recruitment Director Christopher Haraden.

Jack’s book will be added to our year-round roster of training for our agents,” said Haraden. “Sales Sense is a primer on real estate success written by the master. I expect the classes to be sell-outs.”

Conway left his job as a sports writer for the Boston Record American 57 years ago to sell houses for a Natick developer.  He started his own company on the South Shore in 1956 and Jack Conway Realtor is now one of the largest independent real estate firms in Massachusetts!

Plymouth – More than 50 Conway agents, managers, friends and family joined together at Plymouth Plantation for the Alzheimer’s Association Memory Walk 2010 last week. The event featured a large fundraising effort and the Conway team led by President of Corporate Services Maureen McCaffrey and Relocation Director Dawn Stevens raised close to $5,000.

“This was such a wonderful event,” said CEO Carol Bulman, who walked along with her son Mike and dog Buddy. “We are so proud when our agents make the commitment to community events like this. This is such an important cause, and it’s a blessing to be able to help.”

Conway offices came from the local area, Plymouth and Duxbury, and from as far away as Swampscott and South Boston.

Thousands of walkers took part in 1- or 3-mile loops around the plantation and enjoyed the hospitality tables and offerings from vendors. The goal of the fundraising event and the group is to eliminate Alzheimer’s disease through the advancement of research, to provide and enhance care and support for all affected, and to reduce the risk of dementia through the promotion of brain health.

Many of the walkers participated with t-shirts, buttons and homemade signs with notes of remembrance for loved ones suffering from the disease.

“It really give meaning to what we were doing there on the walk,” said Bulman.

Hanover As spring approaches and the birds return to nest, they will have some newly decorated homes courtesy of Jack Conway Realtors.

For the past 15 years, Conway agents, managers and family members participated in the “Houses that Build Homes” program to benefit Habitat for Humanity. Participants decorate the birdhouses, donated by Cape Cod Lumber, which are then sold to the public at South Shore Plaza as part of the fundraising program.

“You can see how much fun people have decorating them, and how well they turn out,” said company President Dick Cahill. “And it’s an important cause to help build housing in the community.”

This year’s sale will kick off April 25 at noon, with special guest Anthony Everett of WVCB-TV. The sale of the decorative and functional birdhouses will run all weekend April 25-27. The funds raised last year amounted to more than $15,000.

“The money we raise from this really makes a difference,” said Habitat’s Executive Director Jerry McDermott at the Conway judging event. “It’s a way to celebrate spring, and to help local families in need of housing.”

Conway holds a contest each year for the best decorated birdhouses, and awards prizes for the winners in each of several age groups. This year there were 40 Conway entries.

In the 3-4 year old group, Caroline Canavan was the winner, with Colin Williams in second place.

In the 7-8 year old group, Liam Canavan was first, Caitlin Canavan second, Nicole McGovern was third and Katlyn and Hayley LaCava finished fourth.

In the age 11 group, Karen Boisson was first, and Chris McGovern was second.

In the adult category, Pembroke manager Joan Williams was the winner. Sue Depatie of  Conway-Plymouth was second, Sheryl Balerna (Pembroke) was third, Kathleen Welch (Hingham) fourth, Tony Caponigro (Norton) fifth, and Joan Willams’ second entry was sixth. Honorable mention went to Conway-Mansfield manager Joyce Gerraughty.

Photo-Conway-Falmouth manager Peter Hawley peers out from behind bars before being bailed out of “jail” as part of a fundraiser for the MDA.

Falmouth–Jack Conway & Co. manager Peter Hawley was dragged off to “jail” last month as a fundraiser for the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA).

Hawley was one of thousands of fundraisers jailed for his convictions in an MDA Lock-Up. Local business and community leaders agree to be “arrested” (for having a “big heart”). Then friends and supporters agree to “bail them out” in order to raise funds for the MDA.

“This is a most worthy fundraising effort, and although I have escaped I continue to seek contributions,” said Hawley, the manager of Conway-Falmouth.

Hawley thanked Conway-Falmouth agents Barbara Bauer, J.R. O’Brien, Jean O’Brien, Matt Cronin and Don Myers, and Kathy Hallam from Conway Financial Services, for bailing him out of jail.

You can still send your donations to Hawley’s attention at the Conway-Falmouth office, 93 Davis Straits, Falmouth, MA, 02540.

MDA is a national voluntary health agency working to defeat more than 40 neuromuscular diseases through programs of worldwide research, comprehensive services and far-reaching professional and public health education. The association’s programs are funded almost entirely by individual private contributors.

Jack Conway Co. is celebrating its 51st anniversary as the largest independently-owned real estate company in Massachusetts.  There are 41 sales offices from Boston to Cape Cod.  The firm also operates its own mortgage company, Conway Financial Services.

Jack Conway & Co. Realtor Chris Greenhalge (left) stepped in to help two local shelters last week. She collected household items for New Hope shelters in Taunton and Attleboro, with the help of her two sons, Sean (right) and Zachary (second from right). Accepting the donations was Nydia Shea.

North Attleboro– In keeping with the spirit of the season, and this particular time of need, Jack Conway & Co. Realtor Chris Greenhalge stepped in to help two local shelters last week.

Greenhalge was able to help a family right away. The family was moving out of the shelter and needed to furnish an apartment immediately.

“It was perfect timing,” said Greenhalge. “We had so many generous donations from all over the place, and this was really a time of need.”

Since Greenhalge made her appeal a few months ago through the newspapers and Web site freecycle.org, she has been collecting household items like kitchen appliances, towels, sheets, lamps and seasonal decorations. Donations poured in from North Attleboro, Attleboro, Norfolk, Plainville and Wrentham.

“The generosity of the people in the area has been amazing,” said Greenhalge. “It was really overwhelming. People would haul in whole boxes of things.”

Greenhalge said one landlord donated an entire working kitchen from an apartment on which she was working. Along with her sons Zach and Sean Greenhalge, Conway-North Attleboro manager Kerry Harkins, and Frances Houston and Nydia Shea from New Hope, everything was organized and delivered.

“These items will help people who are moving out of  New Hope get re-established in their lives,” said Greenhalge.  “We have so much stuff to share and there are others who need it. It just makes so much sense.”

New Hope Inc. offers a variety of individual and family support services through five complementary programs. The non-profit human service agency with over 28 years of experience helps in the area of domestic violence by providing comprehensive help to women and children who are victims of domestic violence.

Those services include two emergency shelters.
