The town of Danvers is steeped in history as one of the first settlements on the North Shore of Massachusetts. Originally a village of Salem, it was incorporated as a separate town in 1757. One of the community’s first settlers was Governor John Endicott for whom Endicott College is named in nearby Beverly.
What began as a small farming town has evolved into a prosperous suburban area with a full range of municipal services, easy commuting access to Boston and a solid public school system, which includes five elementary schools, the Holten Richmond Middle School and Danvers High School. The town also houses four private schools as well as the Essex Agricultural and Technical High School and the main campus of the North Shore Community College, which offers associate degrees, career certificates and lifelong learning programs to residents and out-of-towners.
According to census records, the community’s population is approximately 26,000 and its land area is 14.1 square miles. Natural resources include a small town forest, numerous rivers and brooks and the Putnamville Reservoir.
Located about 18 miles from both Boston and the border of New Hampshire, neighboring towns include Topsfield, Wenham, Beverly, Salem, Peabody and Middleton. Danvers offers direct access to Interstate 95 and Route 128 as well as U.S. Route I with its abundance of restaurants, lodging and shopping amenities.
A popular tourist attraction within the town is the 17th century homestead of Rebecca Nurse, a victim of the 1692 Salem Witch trials. Other sites include the 165-acre Endicott Park, which houses farm buildings, meadows, and walking trails, Glen Magna Farms, a rural estate with carefully landscaped gardens, and the Danvers waterfront with its public and private marinas and yacht club.
Danvers is close to the bustling urban centers of Boston and New Hampshire, but it has managed to maintain its rural community atmosphere with large open spaces and neighborhoods of beautifully preserved antique homes.
