The town of Dartmouth, which is 60 miles from Boston and 30 miles from both Providence and Cape Cod, is an excellent bedroom community for commuters from all three areas. Industry flourishes within the town, which houses the Dartmouth campuses of the University of Massachusetts, and the U. Mass School of Law, as well as the Dartmouth Mall and Cinema, and numerous chain restaurants and shopping plazas.

Incorporated in 1664, many of the town’s early citizens were Quakers, who established meeting houses in the community. A number of these buildings still stand and are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. 

Farming was the principal industry in Dartmouth’s early years, but the natural beauty of its coastline soon attracted affluent citizens from New Bedford who made it into a resort and vacation spot.

Dartmouth includes five villages within its borders — Hixville Village Historic District, Bliss Corner, Padanaram Village, Smith Mills and Russells Mills Village Historic District. Each has a distinct flavor and appeal. Beautiful Padanaram offers breathtaking ocean views and acres of green farmland, and is a popular tourist area with fishing, fine restaurants, and waterfront shops.

The town is home to Demarest Lloyd State Park, Apponagansett Town Beach, Round Hill Beach, Jones Beach, and the Lloyd Center for Environmental Studies.  It has a well-respected public school system as well as several private and parochial schools.
