If you’d like to live in a town that might have been named “Contentment,” you may want to consider Dedham, Massachusetts. Colonial settlers in 1637 proposed to call their town “Contentment,” but the State Court overruled them and chose “Dedham,” named after the British birthplace of some of the original residents.
Dedham today is home to nearly 24,000 people who live on Boston’s southwest border surrounded by the towns of Needham, Westwood and Canton. It is the county seat of Norfolk County and houses the courthouse that was the site of the historic Sacco and Vanzetti bank robbery trial of the 1920s.
The town of Dedham is divided into a number of distinct neighborhoods and depending on where you live, your kids can attend one of four public elementary schools – Oakdale, Greenlodge, Riverdale or the brand new Avery School, a 3-story building with a cutting edge technology center, dedicated music and art rooms, and a gleaming gymnasium. The town also has its own middle school and high school.
If you’re into history, you can visit the Fairbanks House, which is purported to be the oldest timber frame home in the U.S., and The Endicott Estate, a sprawling yellow mansion built in 1904, is open for weddings and private functions.
If shopping is a priority, the massive Legacy Place in Dedham, just completed in 2009, is an open-air “super mall” with top brand shops and restaurants. The complex also houses the Showcase Cinema de Lux offering the latest movie releases as well as a private “Lux Level” with food and drinks served to patrons aged 21 and over.
Commuters have a smooth ride to Boston by car or train. Dedham is directly off Rte 95 and houses two stops of the MBTA commuter rail. The bustling businesses along Rte. 1 and the picturesque tree-lined streets of antique and modern homes in all price ranges make Dedham a good choice for almost everyone. No wonder the Colonists wanted to call it Contentment.
