Hingham is a scenic South Shore community that combines the allure of its old world charms with the convenience of direct access to several major highways. Antique white Colonial estates with black shutters line the beautiful tree-lined Main Street of the town, and new shops mingle with historic buildings, including the carefully restored Loring Hall Cinema, which was a former social meeting hall built in 1852.
Originally named “Bare Cove,” Hingham was settled in 1633 by the first colonists. During World War II, Eleanor Roosevelt wrote a book entitled “This is America,” in which she dubbed the town “The Main Street of America.”
Hingham has seen a boom in real estate development within the last 10 years, probably due to the town’s proximity to public transportation, including the MBTA’s commuter rail and the commuter boat to Boston. The new Hingham Shipyard is a waterfront outdoor development of retail shops, a multi-screen cinema complex, and luxury apartments and condominiums.
The town is also home to the Wompatuck State Park, World’s End, a 250-acre peninsula looking over the harbor, Derby Academy, the oldest co-ed school in the nation, and the historic First Parish Old Ship Church, which was built in 1681 and is still in active use.
Located just 15 miles from Boston, Hingham is a perfect residential choice for working families.
