Hull is a seaside community offering 27 miles of beautiful shoreline. The town’s population soars during the summer months when vacationers flock to the area to enjoy Nantasket Beach, the historic Paragon Park Carousel and the many restaurants, arcades and souvenir shops along Nantasket Avenue. Scenic Point Allerton, at the northern elbow of the Hull peninsula, offers sweeping views of Boston Harbor and the urban skyline.
The town of Hull was founded in 1623 and was settled by 18 families from the Massachusets Bay Colony. It is a peninsula of 2.43 square miles jutting out into Boston Harbor. Surrounded by water, the town’s development has been shaped by the presence of the sea. The community prospered as a fishing village for 150 years, and many residents became famous for their rescues of shipwrecked sailors in the 19th and early 20th centuries. This background is commemorated in the Hull Lifesaving Museum and during the town’s Joshua James Heritage Days each summer. James was a civilian sea captain who was said to have saved more than 500 lives in the 1800s.
Paragon Park, a giant amusement center, operated in Hull for 80 years. The park’s closing in the mid-eighties reshaped the town’s future by making it more of a year-round residence than a summer resort. Housing in Hull ranges from small cottages to oceanfront condominiums to sprawling estates, such as the former residence of President John F. Kennedy’s father-in-law, John “Honey Fitz” Fitzgerald. Residents can take the commuter boat from Pemberton Pier into Boston or board the Harbor Express in neighboring Hingham.
