Fishing and shipbuilding were also major businesses and the eight shipyards on the North River were said to have constructed 1,000 sailing vessels between 1645 and 1870.

The town has five miles of shoreline, three public beaches and access to adjacent Scituate's Humarock beach and resort area. It is home to two wildlife sanctuaries, the North River Arts Society and more than 2,000 acres of conservation land. One of its major events of the year is the Marshfield Fair and 4-H exhibition, which attracts visitors from across the state in late August.
