Originally a village within the town of Rochester, Mattapoisett was incorporated as a town in 1857. Its name, according to the Wampanoag Indians, means “place of rest.” A picturesque seaside community, it is located northeast of New Bedford on Buzzards Bay in Southeastern Massachusetts.
Early industries, included shipbuilding, salt works, and whaling, which flourished for centuries, but Mattapoisett today is mainly a residential suburb and popular summer resort. Many residents work in Greater New Bedford, Providence or Boston with the main transportation routes being Rte. 495 and Rte. 6.
The town wharf offers day trips to Cape Cod, the Elizabethan Islands and Martha’s Vineyard, and seaside Shipyard park hosts summer concerts, 4th of July celebrations and annual Harbor Days festivals.
Housing options include Mattapoisett summer rentals or full-time oceanfront homes, historic Colonials, New England Farm Houses and new residential developments. Mattapoisett is home to Ned’s Point Lighthouse and to the oldest seaside inn in the country. It has its own elementary school and is a member of the Old Rochester School District from grades 7-12.
