The town of Pembroke is a residential suburb located 30 miles from Boston bordering Kingston, Hanson, Norwell, Hanover, Marshfield, Halifax, Plympton and Duxbury. Once a small rural area, the community has grown considerably but still retains many areas of green open spaces as well as its picturesque cranberry bogs, rivers, lakes and ponds.
Pembroke was originally a part of the Duxbury charter of 1637, but it was settled as a separate town in 1712. It housed the first iron manufacturer in the U.S. and early industries included lumber milling, cranberry harvesting and brick making. Although the town is land-locked, shipbuilding was also a major industry in the eighteenth century with six shipyards located along Pembroke’s portion of the North River.
Pembroke today is a bustling community offering a blend of modern amenities and country charms. Housing options range from winterized pond-side cottages to luxury subdivisions. The small town community feel is prevalent throughout the town with parades, local youth sports teams, scouting groups and school-based activities adding to the enjoyment of family life.
The town is home to the Pembroke Country Club, the site of many large functions and an 18-hole golf course, the Pembroke Historical Society, which consists of two former one-room schoolhouses, and the Circa 1706 Friends Meeting House, one of the oldest Quaker buildings in America.
Formerly a member of the Silver Lake Regional High School District in neighboring Kingston, Pembroke now has its own high school, a state-of-the-art public library, an expansive senior center, and an ice skating arena.
