Thousands of tourists flock to the city of Salem every Halloween season to enjoy its Witch Museum, the House of Seven Gables and the carnival-like atmosphere of haunted houses, costumed revelers, graveyard tours and trolley rides through the historic downtown district. The city houses Salem State University, a liberal arts institution offering undergraduate and graduate degrees in teaching and other disciplines, the Peabody Essex Museum, and Pickering Wharf, a harborside village of elegant shops and restaurants.
