The small (3.05 sq. miles) seacoast town of Swampscott lies along the North Shore of Massachusetts in Essex County. Located 15 miles northeast of Boston, a trip to the city by car or commuter rail or to Logan International Airport takes about 20 minutes. The town borders the famous “witch trial city” of Salem, as well as Lynn and Marblehead.
The area was first settled in 1629 as the eastern ward of Lynn and was incorporated as a separate town more than two centuries later. Because of its proximity to the sea, early industry consisted primarily of commercial fishing and lobstering. It is said that the lobster pot was invented there in 1805. John Humphrey, the first deputy governor of the Massachusetts Bay Colony, once lived in Swampscott and his home site has been converted into the Swampscott Historical Society. The Mary Baker Eddy Historic House, dedicated to the founder of Christian Science, is another tourist attraction within the town.
Swampscott was once home to massive grand hotels and sprawling estates, which made it a popular summer resort area for the affluent from around the world. Most of these buildings no longer exist and the town today is primarily a year-round residential community offering fine restaurants, a yacht club, beautiful beaches and skyline views of Boston. Housing options run the gamut from affordable single story Swamscott homes to multi-million dollar mansions by the sea.
