Some might say that Wellesley is the “smartest” town in the country – well, at least the most educated. According to Boston Magazine’s annual “Best Places to Live” report, the community has the greatest percentage of residents with bachelor’s degrees in the U.S. and the second largest percentage of households with one or more members who hold advanced degrees.
This affluent Greater Boston suburb is the home of Wellesley College, which has been ranked the “6th best college in the country” according to Forbes.com, as well as Babson College, listed as the top college for business entrepreneurship by U.S. News and World Report for 14 straight years. The town also contains the main campus of Mass Bay Community College and has a highly rated public school system with an award-winning high school, a middle school and eight elementary schools.
With a population of about 30,000, Wellesley is bordered by the upscale communities of Newton, Weston, Needham, Dover and Natick. Commuters to Boston, just 17 miles away, have direct access to MBTA rail service to the city, and trains also run outbound to Framingham and Worcester.
An open-air shopping district known as Linden Square offers great dining spots, department stores and a flagship Roche Bros. supermarket. The area developed out of a renovation and construction project at the site of the former 1960s-style Linden Street strip mall.
In late May of each year, town residents celebrate “Wellesley’s Wonderful Weekend,” the highlight of which is a massive fireworks display that has drawn national acclaim. And music lovers can catch a concert of the Wellesley Symphony Orchestra, performed on the campus of Mass Bay Community College.
New homes, luxury condominiums, antique houses and stately manors line the neighborhoods of Wellesley, and gardens and greenery abound, especially at the Hunnewell Arboretum, which showcases more than 1,000 species of flowering plants on 22 landscaped acres.
Many notable citizens have hailed from the town of Wellesley, including Katharine Lee Bates, whose song “America the Beautiful” is probably more famous than its 1893 author. If you choose to live in Wellesley, you may meet a few doctors, lawyers, CEOs and professional sports stars at the local coffee shop. The community remains a favorite residential choice for those who can afford the average pricetag of $848,000 for a place to call home.
